Set browser default homepage for all users

The Internet is a double-edged sword for many businesses. It enables workers to find information in mere seconds, but employees can end up abusing their online permissions. Administrators should put in place specific policies limiting Web access for workers, including one that sets the default homepage for all computer users. To change the default homepage in Internet Explorer, use Local Group Policy Editor; to change the default home page in Mozilla Firefox, create the appropriate configuration files.

Internet Explorer

Step 1Click “Start” and type “gpedit.msc” into the search box. Press “Enter” to run Local Group Policy Editor.

Step 2Select “User Configuration,” “Administrative Templates,” “Windows Components” and then “Internet Explorer” from the left pane.

Step 3Right-click “Disable Changing Home Page Settings” from the right pane and then click “Edit.” Click “Enabled.”

Step 4Enter the website address into the “Home Page” field. Click “OK” to set the default homepage in Internet Explorer.

Mozilla Firefox

Step 1Click “Start” and type “notepad” into the search box. Select “notepad.exe” from the search results.

Step 2Copy and paste the following text into Notepad:
[XRE] EnableProfileMigrator=false
Save the file to your desktop with the name “override.ini”. This will disable the Migration Wizard.

Step 3Click “File” and then click “New.” Copy and paste the following text:
pref(“general.config.obscure_value”, 0); pref(“general.config.filename”, “mozilla.cfg”);
Save the file to the desktop as “local-settings.js” to lock the configuration file.

Step 4Create a new file, then copy and paste the following text:
// set Firefox Default homepage pref(“browser.startup.homepage”, “http://<website>&#8221;);
Replace “<website>” with the URL of the target homepage. Save the file as “mozilla.cfg”.

Step 5Right-click “Start” and click “Open Windows Explorer.” Navigate to “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.”

Step 6Go to the desktop. Hold down “Ctrl” and select the files “override.ini” and “mozilla.cfg.” Drag the files over the Windows Explorer icon on the taskbar to re-open the window. Drop both files into the Mozilla Firefox folder.

Step 7Navigate to “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref.” Go to the desktop, select “local-settings.js” and drag-and-drop the file into the “pref” folder by following the same instructions as in the preceding step. This will set the default homepage for all users.

VMWare Fusion 7 – Blank screen in Full screen mode

My VM is a Windows 2012 Server which is operational in normal window mode (ie non-full screen mode) but as soon as i switch to Full screen it’s blank.

Note: Make sure that VMWare Tools are installed

Shut down or power off the virtual machine. You cannot change the setting while the virtual machine is powered on or suspended.
1) From the VMware Fusion menu bar, select Window > Virtual Machine Library.
2) Select a virtual machine and click Settings.
3) In the Settings Window, in the System Settings section, select Display.
4) Select Accelerate 3D graphics.

Also remember to check off Use Full resolution for Retina display and Automatically adjust user interface size in the virtual machine.

Alternatively you can click on Make text and other items larger or smaller under Screen Resolution option to reserve the resolve of screen

Disable windows Narrator

If you’re familiar with editing the Windows registry, you can use the solution described here:
•Launch regedit.exe and navigate to: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
•Create a key with the name Narrator.exe
•Inside the key, create a new String value called Debugger, and set its value to %1

This won’t be changed by Windows updates, and can be easily reverted by just deleting the key.

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of GPT partition style

1.Create USB stick using Apple Bootcamp Assistant. This procedure only works with it.
2.When it Bootamp assitant reboots your machine you need to interrupt the installation.
3.When you hear the startup sound, hold option until it presents you with login options.
4.Select your Macintosh HD to boot back into OSX.
5.Run Disk Utility, select the Macintosh then choose the partitions tab.
6.The BOOTCAMP partition should be at the bottom. Select this partition by clicking on it. Ensure it is the highlighted partition then press minus to remove it.
7.Click apply on the bottom right to make the changes.
8.Now press plus to add a new partition which will likely be names Macintosh HD2
9.Select this new partition then you can define the settings on the right.
10.Rename this to BOOTCAMP.
11.Change the type to ExFAT.
12.Now click apply on the again to make the changes.
13.Reboot you Mac, press option again during the boot and this time select the Windows device with the USB logo on it. Its orange.
14.Now it will start the install process. When it gets to the list of partition you should see four of them. You want the last one. It will say it cannot install on this.
15.Make sure the fourth partition is selected then click format. When it is done the error message should be gone and you should be able to continue.
16.During install it will suggest turning on auto updates. I recommend you turn this off until the bootcamp drivers are installed. When it is finished prepping the install it will reboot.
17.Each time it reboots you will need to intervene by pressing option but from now on select the Windows device with the picture of the hard drive. It is a silver color
18.It will reboot two or three times during the install. Each time you will need press option during boot to reselect the Windows device on the hard drive.

19.At the end of the installation it will prompt you to install the Apple Bootcamp Drivers.

Resetting Administrator Password in Windows 2008

Being in my line of work, I make use of dozens of test servers and virtual machines and from time to time I can forget what the administrator password is. To save time, usually I would use the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor to simply reset the password. However I was told of another useful method using the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 installation DVD / ISO Image. It’s a breeze to reset the password so I thought I would share. Personally I have tried this on a standalone Windows Server 2008 R2 but it should also work with Domain Controllers for resetting domain administrator passwords.

  • Boot from the Micrsoft Windows Server 2008 DVD
  • From the Install Windows menu, click “Next”.
  • Select “Repair your computer”
  • In the System Recovery Options, select the Operating System instance that you wish to repair and click “Next”.
  • Select “Command Prompt”. The
  • At the command prompt, run the following commands:

    cd windows\system32
    ren Utilman.exe Utilman.exe.old
    copy cmd.exe Utilman.exe


  • Reboot the server allowing Windows to load as normal
  • At the logon screen, press Windows Key + U.
  • As the command prompt, enter the following command:

    net user administrator Password12
    This will set the password for the Administrator user to be Password12 (case sensitive).

Closing the command prompt, you should now be able to log back onto the server using the password you have provided in the last step.

Cleanup Steps

Once you have verified you can log on to the server you will have repeat the steps above and boot using the Windows Server 2008 DVD/ISO and run the command prompt again.

  • Delete the newly created Utilman.exe from C:\Windows\System32
  • Rename Utilman.exe.old back to Utilman.exe

You should be back up and running as if nothing ever happened.

How to setup file indexing

  1. go to your SERVER MANAGER
  2. select FILE SERVICES
  4. put a check mark beside WINDOWS INDEX SERVICE and click NEXT
  5. select the partition(s) you want indexed.  Generally this you will only select drives that contain network file shares and not the Operating System drive.
  6. wait 5 minutes for it to install (on the installs I have done, I have NOT had to reboot, but the installer tells you that it MIGHT request a reboot, so be prepared for that)
  7. After the install is complete you can check your services for WINDOWS INDEX SERVICE to ensure it is STARTED
  8. You may also want to view the indexing progressa and settings by clicking START, typing INDEX and then clicking INDEXING OPTIONS

Your searches on your windows 7 / Vista client, against the Windows 2008 file server will now take less than 3 seconds, which is pretty impressive.

To backup SQL properly there are serveral easy items you need to setup:

  1. double click on each datbase and set your BACKUP MODEL to FULLsql-maintenance-plans 
  2. go to MANAGEMENT > MAINTENANCE PLANS and setup the three plans shown below
  3. go to SQL SERVER AGENT > JOBS and make sure your jobs appear here (and make sure the SQL SERVER AGENT service is running!)


  2. Drag our the MAINTENANCE CLEANUP TASK and set it to delete backed up database files (by setting the FILE EXTENTION field to BAK – you do NOT enter .BAK) older than X days (I like 4 for X)
  3. Drag our the MAINTENANCE CLEANUP TASK and set it to delete backed up logs (by setting the FILE EXTENTION field to LOG – you do NOT enter .LOG) older than X days (I like 4 for X)
  4. Connect all of these in the order shown by dragging the green arrow at the bottom of one box to the other
  5. Set this to run several times a day (like every TWO hours from 9:00am to 5:59pm)


  1. Drag out the BACKUP DATABASE TASK and set it to backup ALL DATABASES, FULL and set the CREATE A BACKUP FILE FOR EVERY DATABASE to what a location you like but set the BACKUP FILE EXT to TRN
  2. Drag our the MAINTENANCE CLEANUP TASK and set it to delete backed up logs (by setting the FILE EXTENTION field to TRN – you do NOT enter .TRN) older than X days (I like 5 for X)
  3. Connect all of these in the order shown by dragging the green arrow at the bottom of one box to the other
  4. Set this to run daily at an off hour (like 10pm)


  2. Drag out the REBUILD INDEX TASK
  3. Drag out the SHRINK DATABASE TASK
  5. Drag out the HISTORY CLEAN UP TASK
  7. Connect all of these in the order shown by dragging the green arrow at the bottom of one box to the other
  8. Set this to run once a week at some very off hour (like 4AM Saturday morning) AFTER you have completed a full backup.
